Nica HOPE opened its doors to the community of the Managua City trash dump in February of 2008,
receiving a flood of students seeking to expand their minds, skills, and opportunities for the future. With children working in the trash to make little more than $2 a day, Nica HOPE programs aim to provide education and job opportunities apart from the trash for these youth.

CURRENTLY AT NICA HOPE:
Sponsor a Child from the Managua City Trash Dump
Only $1 a day to get a child worker in school
and on the path to a future apart from the trash!
In the community that lives and works in the Managua City trash dump, the majority of children do not make it past sixth grade. Among the community that lives in the dump, over 30% are illiterate. Almost half the children that work in the trash dump do not attend school, while those that do show extremely high absenteeism. At the public school, it is common for students from the poorest households to drop out before the year is over, often because they can't afford school supplies, school uniforms or shoes. Many skip school to help with the household responsibilities, whether cleaning, caring for younger children, or working in the trash. The result is a severely under-educated generation of youth that will face the same constraints as their parents, trapped in a cycle of dependence on work in the trash.
By agreeing to “sponsor” a child with Nica HOPE, you have the unique opportunity of directly intervening in the life of a child from this community by providing the resources for a quality education, thereby opening the doors of opportunities for a future apart from the trash. This program targets children who have dropped out of school and/or are working in collecting, washing, and selling recyclables from the dump. For $30 a month, or $360 a year, each sponsored child will be given a targeted package of services to get them in school, help them to stay in school, and help provide them with the tools and valuable motivation necessary to achieve both a career and a future apart from the trash.
$30/month sponsorship covers:
School supplies, school uniform, and shoes
Daily school lunch
After-school tutoring
Computer classes and/or vocational skills training
Continual household visits by Nica HOPE team
